About Cañón del Sumidero National Park

Established in 1980, Cañón del Sumidero National Park protects a spectacular 25-kilometer-long gorge formed by the Grijalva River in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. The canyon's walls soar up to 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) high, creating a breathtaking geological landmark surrounded by tropical rainforest and dry forest, home to a rich biodiversity including species such as spider monkeys, crocodiles, and numerous bird varieties. Visitors experience the park primarily via boat tours on the river, which navigate narrows and rapids while providing close-up views of steep cliffs adorned with caves and waterfalls like the iconic Christmas Tree waterfall. Alongside river adventures, scenic overlooks on the canyon rim offer panoramic vistas of the canyon and Chiapas highlands. The park is culturally significant, with indigenous communities nearby and historical ties to the region’s colonial and pre-Hispanic past. Popular activities include boat tours, hiking, wildlife viewing, fishing, and photography. The park is accessible year-round but is particularly popular during the dry season. Its proximity to the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez makes it a favored destination for both local residents and international tourists seeking a combination of nature immersion and adventure. Conservation efforts focus on protecting the fragile ecosystems, endangered species, and maintaining the water quality of the Grijalva River system.
